The Effect of Time Spent with Videos on 6th Graders' Happiness: Parallel Mediation of Physical Self-Image and Peer Attachment
Lee Su-Hyun
Abstract
Given the recent media trend that features online video platforms and short-form videos, this study aims to explore the impact of watching videos on children¡¯s quality of life as well as its mechanisms. We investigate the influence of watching videos on 6 graders¡¯ happiness and examine whether this effect is mediated by children¡¯s physical self-image and peer attachment . The participants were 1,276 children who participated in the 13th wave (2020) of the Korean Children Panel Study. Using PROCESS Macro Model 4 , we conducted parallel mediation analysis. The results indicated that the time watching videos exerted a negative effect on the children¡¯s happiness. This effect was partially mediated by children¡¯s physical self-image and peer attachment, which were not statistically different. Improving the quality of life of children amid fast changes in the media use environment can be effective to offset the media¡¯s distorted messages about the body and to promote children¡¯s social relationships.
